Accused Hazel Dell Baby Seller Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge

That's what the title SHOULD have said.

"A woman accused of trying to sell her baby at a Hazel Dell Taco Bell pleaded guilty Thursday to reckless endangerment in an agreement with prosecutors that allows her to be released from jail this week.

Heidi Knowles, 36, was charged with attempted child selling, a gross misdemeanor, but agreed to plead guilty to reckless endangerment, also a gross misdemeanor. Clark County District Court Judge Sonya Langsdorf sentenced her to 77 days in jail.

Since Knowles has already been in jail 77 days, she received credit for time served and will be released from the Clark County Jail soon, said Deputy Prosecutor Jeff McCarty.

An additional 287 days of jail are hanging over her head if she does not comply with conditions of probation, including undergoing mental health and substance abuse evaluations, McCarty said. Knowles will also be on probation for two years.

Prosecutors had alleged that Knowles approached a woman at the restaurant, handed over her 3-day-old son and offered to sell him for a price between $500 and $5,000, according to court documents. The woman notified police.

Responding to the 911 call the evening of July 14, deputies found Knowles at Kay’s Motel on Highway 99 with the infant, who appeared to be in good health. They called for officials with Child Protective Services, who took custody of the baby.

Deputies said Knowles appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Defense attorney John Terry said Knowles entered a type of guilty plea that disputes the prosecution’s version of events but accepts the plea bargain to avoid a conviction on another offense.

Terry said his client maintains that she never made any statements about selling her son. The defense attorney, however, acknowledged that other witnesses reportedly heard her statements. He said, based on the evidence from those witnesses, the statements were made in jest.

“The facts indicate it was never meant” as a real selling, Terry said.

Knowles’ son, who was born July 11, is in foster care with a relative. Separate court proceedings on the custody of the child are pending."

My Weekend

On Friday night we decided to go camping. Typical us, we got there just before 7pm and the sun was close to setting. No biggie. We quickly set up camp and got some tasty burgers on the grill and yummy beers in our tummies.

We sat by the fire and chatted it up while Daphne snoozed in the tent.

The next morning was delightful. I think I can only enjoy waking up at 7am on a Saturday when we're camping. Daphne took a liking to chopping our fire wood with the hatchet.

That evening, John and I went out to celebrate our friends b-day. We started out with dinner and drinks. I had the most AMAZING chicken peanut soup. I can't stop thinking about it! Then we went to a comedy club! We were able to watch Scott Thompson and Kevin McDonald perform!

Today- I had to deal with this. I have learned A LOT of things about planting tomatoes.

1) 22 tomato plants are too many
2) bigger tomatoes does not mean better
3) I need to leave more space in between the plants next time.
4) Romas are the way to go! More romas, less freakish monster tomatoes.

I will be up to my elbows in tomatoes this week as I try to turn it all onto tomato sauce.

Words of Wisdom

"According to researchers at Harvard University School of Public Health, low fat diets aren't the gateway to good health. In fact, they can do more harm than good, since low-fat foods are often high in sugar and sodium (to make up for the lack of flavor) and can increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes. So instead of trying to eliminate fat from your diet, focus on eating foods that are rich in healthy fats, which are flavorful (plus you can eat more of them).

Update in Photos

I was thinking of doing an update, but then decided to look through my iPhone photos to see what stories they could tell...

My cat IS the cutest cat ever. End of story.

Some of Daphne's homework with the notable Daphne Flare added.

A GREAT recipe I came across: 1/2 cup canned pumpkin, 1/2 cup almond butter, 2 eggs, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice, 1/2 tsp salt. Viola! Pumpkin pancakes!

Last weekend we went bowling as a family :) It was AWESOME even though I bowled my WORST game EVER. Seriously though, I usually win and I bowled a messily 50... or something like that. Still tons of fun though.

I already consider myself the luckiest mom in the world when I get cute crafts like this from my daughter a least every other day.

This photo was taken on accident. I was trying to take a picture of something else. But when I looked back on it, I totally fell in love with it. This was John and me sitting in our living room on a weekend morning sipping our coffee in our pj's. Totally love it. I love how our feet are next to each other. And that mine are effortlessly more tan than John's.

And then THIS happened over the weekend....

A cod fillet wrapped in BACON.

In all of my 28 years, this is the BEST thing I have ever tasted.

Found an awesome calendar. Why yes it is a vintage Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer calendar for 2012.

Oh Urban Outfitters. How I covet thee. I'm thinking something like this for my 10 year high school reunion next month.

I rearranged the reception area in John's office. I LOVE IT.

A harvest of my roma tomatoes...

And my freaky-large-weird-looking-pumpkin-ish-tomatoes.

I put raisins in the corner of John's partner's office. It looks like rodent poop, no?

Good-Bye Summer

I know a lot of people say this, but I am totally resisting fall. Why? Because I live in a part of the U.S. that sees approximately 2 weeks of real summer weather. In all seriousness, last week it was in the 90's and this week it's in the 60's. This year, I have been waiting all those long spring months for the weather to actually be HOT. It finally came just a few weeks ago and before I could even get tired of it, it was gone. As part of my resistance I kept telling myself that it would warm back up or that this was just some weather fluke. And then I started to get really bummed. Just this evening it was grey and rainy outside. As I was doing the dishes my mind started to wander off to all the things about fall that I LOVE. So as a way to pump myself up (and maybe another fall-resistant reader) I wanted to compile a list of all the things I'm looking forward to when fall officially starts.

  1. Sweet potatoes
  2. Crock pot cooking
  3. Soups
  4. Stews
  5. Cooking with pumpkin
  6. Starting school again
  7. Sweaters
  8. The Holidays
  9. Citrus fruits being in season
  10. Cozying up inside and under lots of blankets

Daphne's Spin on Things

I was going through Daphne's projects that she brought home today... and stumbled upon this

I just had to laugh out loud. Daphne is always putting her little trademarks on everything. First of all- why did she connect the shapes? And second, she drew in her own picture of herself and connected it to her name. I love trying to figure out what goes through that kids head all day.

Do yourself a favor today. Set aside 5 minutes and read this. I especially like the part about dining out.

FIRST DAY OF KINDERGARTEN!

Daphne on her first day of kindergarten!

We were ALL very excited for today. We did many things to prepare; got new shoes and new school supplies a couple days ago, picked fruits and veggies from the garden for lunches, packed lunch the night before, and picked out an outfit to wear. I figured she would be excited and possibly wake up early, but I had no idea she would be wide awake at 6am (normally an 8am riser)! I set my alarm for 6am, and she was already awake and coloring in her playroom.

After having a relaxing morning at home getting ready, we all walked to Daphne's school to drop her off. And here are the many first day of school photos:

My favorite...
Here she is in front of her classroom... as you can see she has had enough of the picture taking. The lady in the red standing in the doorway is her teacher, Mrs. Lee. We were able to meet her last night, as well as see where Daphne's class, desk, and cubby would be at the back-to-school open house.

First assignment: Coloring. I think she's got this kindergarten thing in the bag.

We're so proud of our little kindergartner!

Monday Thoughts

I want a dehydrator. And a juicer. I want to be able to grow SO many more fruits and veggies in my backyard... maybe next year.

I also want to change the web address for this blog. Because, seriously, does John have anything to do with this blog? Ok, maybe a little tiny bit. But it's not really his blog, or our blog. It's my blog... and sometimes he's mentioned. :)

I also want a magic godmother to come and waver her wand and my whole house will clean itself.

Aaaaannnnd, she can also wave her wand to have all the unhealthy food I ate over the labor day weekend to be magically removed from my body!!

Daphne starts kindergarten tomorrow... omg.
